Kushima Island & Suzushima Island

Experience the dynamic movement of the earth

From Shingu's Miwasaki fishing port, you can see Kushima Island and Suzushima Island on the coastline along other unusually-shaped rocks. These islands are recognized as geosites as part of the Nanki Kumano Geopark area. You can find over 120 species of plant from 51 different families on Kushima Island, including the city flower of Shingu, the hamayu or giant crinum lily. Over 62 species of plants can be found on Suzushima Island as well. Shingu City has nine spots certified as geosites, including Kushima Island, Suzushima Island, Koya-zaka Slope, Ojigahama Coast and Mt. Horaisan.

What is Nanki Kumano Geopark?

There are three different types of geological terrain formed by plate subduction in the Nanki Kumano Geopark. There are nine municipalities recognized as Nanki Kumano Geopark areas, including Shingu City, Shirahama Town, Susami Town, Nachikatsuura Town, Kushimoto Town and others.
